Dr. Homer’s Hockey for Health Program

Attention ladies, Physician’s Promise is getting ready to begin another Hockey for Health session starting this Thursday morning from 9:30 AM-10:30 AM at the Belmont Ice Complex located in West Kittanning, PA. If you have a desire to be strong, lose weight, and participate in some friendly competition, please keep reading. Based on a suggestion from my wife, we started a Women’s Hockey for Health Program a little over a year ago. This program was designed for women of all ages and various skating abilities. It provides a way for them to stay strong and healthy while gaining insight into a sport that provides a sense of camaraderie and competition.

Hockey is not only an interest of mine (or my entire family!), but it’s also a great example of a sport that allows you to reap maximum health and physical fitness benefits. Hockey requires the body to cycle through shifts of intense exercise followed by short periods of recovery (known as interval or
anaerobic training). A recent study in The Journal of Physiology revealed that 20 minutes of high-interval training provided the same benefits of longer exercise sessions that focused on endurance training. CNN reported that this study also suggested that quick, high-interval training may represent an alternative to endurance training to improve metabolic health and reduce the risk for chronic diseases.

Currently, the Hockey for Health Program has a group of approximately 10 ladies of various ages (20’s-50’s) and various skating abilities (from beginner on up). Our next session begins Thursday, February 21, 2013 and runs every Thursday morning ending on Thursday, March 28, 2013. The cost of the entire session is $60 and a complimentary jersey will be provided for all new members. We look forward to seeing many of you soon!
