Kroger and Safeway have joined other major retailers like Target, Meijer, Aldi, Giant Eagle, Whole Foods and many others in protecting consumers, wild salmon, and the environment by rejecting genetically engineered salmon. Costco is one of the largest retailers of salmon and seafood and has not yet agreed to join the others. What is wrong with GE salmon? GE salmon is created by splicing genes from an eel-like creature called the ocean pout into the genome of the Atlantic salmon. These genes crank out growth hormone year-round, resulting in a fish that grows faster, cutting the time to reach market weight almost in half. Many human safety and environmental concerns result from this experimental fish. With no labeling and no standards for genetically engineered animals, this may only be the beginning of man creating laboratory animals that will end up on dinner plates and disrupt or destroy our natural ecosystem and human health.
